Jordan Spieth Tries To Chase Down Ryan Moore

Well wouldn’t you know it, Jordan Spieth is in the mix of things at the Valspar Championship.  The twenty-one year old is not only in the running for the game’s brightest young star, he’s also becoming its model of consistency.  Since December he’s won the Australian Open, the Hero World Challenge, and picked up three top-ten finishes on the PGA Tour.  After a 68 on Saturday, Spieth is one shot back of leader Ryan Moore and knows it will take another solid round on Sunday to catch him.

"“Ryan has been obviously on his game for weeks now and I’ve just been starting to trend up where I want to be,” Spieth said.  “We’re both really right where we want to be this week. So, with that being said, he’s a great ball-striker.  He hits it very straight and very disciplined and good putter.  I expect him to shoot a few under tomorrow and I’m going to have a really good round to win.” (PGA Tour.com)"

After three straight rounds in the 60s, Moore is hoping to put the finishing touches on his fifth PGA Tour victory.  He’s already picked up a win in this wrap around season when he bested he field this past November in Malaysia.  Coming off a ninth place finish last week at Doral, More is riding high and playing really well.  Innisbrook is no cupcake, and it’s famed Snake Pit can take down some of the game’s best, and More knows to be playing well on this golf course is something to be proud of.

"“Any day around this golf course with no bogies is pretty good especially the spots where I hit it,” Moore said. “I was able to save par really low in the middle of my round, made some good putts but had some good chip shots.  Was able to get it rolling there and make some birdies coming in.” (PGATour.com)"

Lurking behind Moore and Spieth are a trio of golf’s best.  Patrick Reed, Matt Kuchar, and Henrik Stenson all sit at -5, just four shots back of Moore.  In a season where third round leaders have had all sorts of problems on Sundays, any of these three can make a run at the title.  Reed has already won this season and nearly picked up another one a few weeks ago at the Honda Classic.  Stenson made the most of his season debut last week at Doral with a 4th place finish, and Kuchar has been one of the tour’s most consistent players over the past few years with wins in each of the last three seasons.

As the field gets ready to try and chase down Moore and Spieth, all the attention will be on the twenty-one year old.  After having 54-hole leads at The Masters and Players last season, Spieth has put himself in position to be the game’s best young player.  We’re all searching for the next Tiger Woods or for a young star to challenge Rory McIlroy and a win today will give Spieth plenty of confidence as Augusta beckons and things get serious.
