Tiger Woods Relapses at Wyndham Championship Ending Playoff Hopes

A bogey on the 18th green of his third round cost Tiger Woods a spot in the final grouping for Sunday, but it was still an opportunity for him to grab his first victory in over two years. Woods opened his final round at the Wyndham Championship at 13-under, two shots back of leader and good pal Jason Gore.

Not only was he looking for his first win in 750 days, but he was also trying to make the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Big Cat needed to crack the top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings and could only do so with a win or solo second place finish.

The previous largest jump to make the FedEx Cup playoffs in the final week was from 140th. Tiger entered the week at 187th. If there was anyone who could do it, Edrick was the guy.

Being his first appearance at the Wyndham Championship, the crowds were electric all week and they came out in droves on Sunday hoping to see Woods save his season with a victory.

“The atmosphere is incredible,” Woods said. “… It’s just a lot of fun to play in front of them.”

Unfortunately, he had a minor relapse that put a damper on his whole round.

He got things started with six consecutive pars. He had birdie looks on each of the first five holes, but simply couldn’t convert any of his putts and settled for tap-in pars.

Tiger reached the par 3 7th hole and pulled his tee shot into the crowd. After pulling off an impressive flop shot to leave him with a 6 footer, Woods put a weak stroke on the ball and ended up settling for bogey to drop to -12 and three shots off the lead.

  • Another missed birdie attempt led to par on the 8th hole, but Eldrick capitalized on the 9th hole with 9 foot birdie putt to get the crowd roaring and build some momentum heading into the back nine.

He’d par the 10th hole, but something went horribly wrong on the 11th hole. After putting his drive in the rough, he tugged his second shot to the left of the green. Attempting to pitch it close to the hole, Tiger shanked his pitch into the rough on the opposite side of the green.

He had a difficult chip for his par attempt and he chunked it short of the green. It seemed like the yips were making their way back after the progress he showed all week. He’d finish with a triple bogey dropping him seven shots out of the lead and essentially ending any hopes at making the FedEx Cup Playoffs.

Meanwhile, 51 year old Davis Love III sank an eagle on 15 to take sole possession of the lead at -17 and would be joined by Tiger’s playing partner, Scott Brown, moments later.

Tiger followed up his triple bogey with another bogey on the 12th hole as his round continued to derail. He would recompose by knocking off three consecutive birdies to get to -12. Big Cat followed that up with pars on 16 and 17 and had a good look at birdie on 18, knocking it within five feet from 195 yards out.

He drained the putt to finish at 13-under for the tournament and four shots back of clubhouse leader, Davis Love III. DLIII would go on to win, becoming the third oldest winner on the PGA TOUR at 51 years of age.

Just like that, Tiger Woods’ season came to an end. He needed to get something going early so he could feed off the energy of the crowd, but the magic was not there.

Minus the hiccup on the back nine of his final round, Tiger had a positive week at Sedgefield Country Club. He finished tied for 10th overall and tied for 18th in greens in regulation. He gained a total of 8.28 strokes on the field with his performance and was 10th in strokes gained putting.

While the PGA TOUR heads to the Barclays next week to begin the FedEx Cup Playoffs, Tiger Woods will head back to Jupiter, Florida where he will begin his offseason. The next time we see him play, he will be 40 years old. Until then, he can spend his remaining months as a 39 year old reflecting on his 2015 season.
