Brandel Chamblee Is Wrong About Tiger Woods’ Ryder Cup Captaincy

Team USA pulled off a thrilling victory over the International Team in the Presidents Cup this past weekend, albeit without the help of Tiger Woods. Being absent from the Presidents Cup must have gotten Tiger fired up because he made an interesting phone call on Friday.

It’s unlikely that Woods will be a candidate to make the roster for the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be a part of the competition.

Tiger placed a phone call to Fred Couples, who was serving as an assistant captain for Team USA in South Korea. Woods was watching the U.S. struggle to get points in Day 2 and had to speak his mind to someone. After speaking with Boom Boom, Tiger then asked to talk with Davis Love III, who is the captain for America in the 2016 Ryder Cup.

"“He [Woods] was watching at home and he just had to call,” Love said. “He was talking about all the things he thought we needed to do, and he had a lot of ideas. We’re already doing a lot of planning for next year, and it’s great. It’s part of the whole process that started after Gleneagles. Everybody is thinking about it, which is great.”"

The only person DLIII has talked about choosing as an assistant captain is his buddy Tom Lehman, but says Woods and Phil Mickelson are a possibility.

Tiger’s willingness to call ahead and get the ball rolling about the Ryder Cup is great news. Not only is a positive to see that he’s already thinking about tournament, but he’s also being realistic about his participation.

Woods turns 40 years old at the end of December and with his most recent back surgery, he’s expected back in “early 2016” whatever that may mean. It’s going to be very difficult for Tiger to not only get a late start to his season, but also play well enough to make the Ryder Cup roster.

I personally think this is a move Tiger should have done in the past Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups. His presence is too valuable to be wasted away sitting on his couch. We saw how young this Presidents Cup team was and it will look very similar at the Ryder Cup in a year.

His experience is priceless and could work wonders for the young guns in these match play events. It could also be a step in the right direction for a U.S. team that has struggled to figure out how to beat the Europeans. Just the aura of having Tiger Woods on Team USA’s sidelines will bring a sense of confidence to the golfers.

Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee recently made some comments saying that Tiger doesn’t deserve to be a vice-captain at the Ryder Cup because Woods didn’t show passion for the event when he played in it.

"“I don’t really think it’s appropriate to give players leadership roles in an event they didn’t show interest or passion for when they were competitors.”"

For those who don’t know Brandel Chamblee, he likes to run his mouth, especially when it comes to Tiger Woods. Chamblee must be jealous his career on the PGA TOUR never amounted to Woods’ career because Brandel sure has a lot to say for a guy who only one win in his lifetime.

Big Cat is clearly showing that he’s passionate about being vice-captain if he’s calling a year in advance with ideas on how to make the team better. Chamblee says that if Tiger would have cared more about the Ryder Cup, then he would have finished with a better record than 13-17-3.

Well Brandel, if you cared more about your PGA TOUR career, you would have done better than one measly win. Maybe you shouldn’t be able to cover the sport of golf since you weren’t passionate enough when you played.
