This past week at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational was one filled with storylines that may have leave a lasting impact in the world of golf for more than just a few rounds. There was the whole Tiger Woods meltdown that left him at 18-over par at the end of the tournament. And there was the calf tear by Lee Westwood, who was chasing Tiger in the world rankings, and trying to build momentum towards the PGA Championship where he could capture his first-ever major. And then there was Phil Mickelson.

I was watching the pre-game show this morning on The Golf Channel before the early coverage of the Bridgestone Invitational started and Frank Nobilo made a point that got me thinking. He said if Phil Mickelson does happen to overtake the top spot in the world golf rankings, it would be better if he did it by actually winning the tournament instead of just finishing high enough to take the top spot. His point was by winning, people may look at Phil as actually the BEST PLAYER in the world, rather than by just finishing high enough and people thinking [...]
On a day where it seemed like maybe five or six guys could win the golf tournament, only one stepped up and made it his tournament to lose down the stretch. And that man was Phil Mickelson. Mickelson had a dominating performance this afternoon, shooting 5-under par on the day to finish at 16-under for the championship, and took home his third green jacket, with Lee Westwood being his closest competition at 13-under.
A lot of talk has been made heading into this PGA Tour season about the new wedges that have to be used in order to comply with the new rule put in place. Well, there have been some rumors going around that Phil Mickelson is thinking about using his old wedges for this week’s event.
Phil to Play at Torrey Pines
When we all found out that Tiger Woods would be taking a leave of absence, there was a lot of talk about who could be the young guy that would step up in his place, and have a great year on the tour. While I think there will be a young player that will breakout, there’s still another guy that I think will have the biggest year. And that’s Phil Mickelson.
While Phil Mickelson hasn’t had the best of years on or off the course, he’s certainly made a great run here to end the season. And he added a victory at the HSBC Champions to that run, as he held off Ernie Els to pick up the win.
Well it looks like we’re going to be in for another showdown between the two greatest golfers in the world, as Phil Mickelson has taken the lead at the HSBC Champions. He currently has a two shot lead over Tiger Woods, who sits at 12-under for the tournament. Nick Watney is tied with Woods for the second spot as well.
As if you would expect anything different, Tiger Woods has managed to find his way to the top of the leaderboard after round two at the HSBC Champions. First round leader Nick Watney is also still at the top after shooting a 70 for the round.
Since Tiger Woods is playing this week, there’s a good chance that the HSBC Champions event has caught your attention a little bit. But there’s a surprising leader after round one, as Nick Watney shot a 64 for the first round, which tied a course record.
While we haven’t seen a ton of big names playing here lately, there are several of them competing at the Singapore Open right now, as Ian Poulter has taken the early lead at the tournament.
Now that the FedEx Cup playoffs have come and gone, it’s time to look back and decide whether or not it was a success.
I would have to say that despite some of the negativity coming in about the format and other things of that nature, this year’s FedEx Cup would have to be considered a success. Most of the tournaments were exciting, and the only real surprise of the whole thing was Heath Slocum winning The Barclays.
Phil Mickelson is Back!
We all thought Kenny Perry would be the feel good story today if he could hold off Tiger Woods at the Tour Championship. Someone did hold off Tiger, but it wasn’t Perry. It was Phil Mickelson.
Mickelson, after being over par for the tournament after round one, finished at 9-under for the championship, three shots ahead of Tiger. I said in my predictions this week that I just hoped Phil would be in contention on Sunday, and he did me one better. He won the whole thing.
