Second round action is still underway at the 92nd PGA Championship, with players still trying to finish their rounds after play was suspended due to darkness yesterday. Matt Kuchar still has a one-shot lead over Nick Watney, but there’s a familiar name that has found himself in the mix, and that name is Jim Furyk. Furyk wrapped up his second round this morning, and fired a 68 to sit only two shots off the lead.
We already know what happened last week at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. It was easily the worst week of professional golf that we have seen Tiger Woods play in his stellar career, and many (including myself), were starting to wonder just how bad things could get for Tiger. Well, instead of carrying over last week’s abomination to this week, he instead came out hot early, and is currently only a few shots off the lead.
It’s officially PGA Championship week here on PGN, which means that there are plenty of things to talk about as we get ready for the year’s final major. Storyline-wise, it might be hard to top the events of the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, but there’s no doubt that this tournament will bring us plenty of drama and suspense, since there is always a big story that comes out of this event. And that was exactly the case at the 2009 PGA Championship at Hazeltine.
The title above might be the most shocking I’ve seen in the game of golf in a while. Tiger Woods, former superman of golf, all-planet performer, and possibly the greatest to ever play the game, has wrapped up his week at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. And it’s easily the worst week of golf we’ve ever seen this man play, as Tiger topped his career-worst at Firestone yet again by shooting a 77, and finishing at +18 for the week.
Top Ranked Player vs. The Best Player
I was watching the pre-game show this morning on The Golf Channel before the early coverage of the Bridgestone Invitational started and Frank Nobilo made a point that got me thinking. He said if Phil Mickelson does happen to overtake the top spot in the world golf rankings, it would be better if he did it by actually winning the tournament instead of just finishing high enough to take the top spot. His point was by winning, people may look at Phil as actually the BEST PLAYER in the world, rather than by just finishing high enough and people thinking [...]
Tiger Woods Making a Strong Run…..For Last Place
Yesterday, we talked about the disappointing ventures of Tiger Woods in the first two days of the 2010 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. After all, a 74 and a 72 simply isn’t Tiger-like at Firestone. Well, Tiger managed to top that career-worst 74 at the course, as he struggled to a round of 75, and is currently only two spots away from being in last place on the leaderboard.
So perhaps this explains Lee Westwood‘s second round 76 today a little bit better. Word has just come out that Westwood is withdrawing from the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational, citing a torn calf muscle. And the even bigger news in this is that Westwood will not participate in next week’s PGA Championship at Whistling Straits, ending his hopes of putting his major-less streak behind him.
Bridgestone Invitational: Picks and Predictions
Hello ladies and gentlemen. I want to thank Blake for the kind introduction yesterday as well as giving me the chance to write on PGN. With my first post I am going to do something simple and give you my predictions for this week’s Bridgestone Invitational.
A Look Back at the 2009 WGC-Bridgestone Invitational
While most could agree that the field for the Greenbrier Classic wasn’t as strong as it could be, the event still found a way to captivate golf fans with the low scoring…..and the really low scoring by Stuart Appleby. But this week, the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational boasts an impressive field, as both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will be present at Firestone, and Anthony Kim makes his return after thumb surgery in May.
Thoughts on the "Timing" Issues at Firestone
So after Tiger Woods proceeded to have another magical Sunday, including a beautiful shot on the 16th hole to all but win the tournament, the main talk for the morning has been about the slow play claim that was brought up by a rules official at number 16. From what I could gather in the story, it seems as though Padraig Harrington was told by a rules official (European Tour chief referee, to be exact) as he approached the 16th green, that the two were being put on the clock, as they were already way behind schedule in terms of [...]
Tiger Wins the WGC Bridgestone Invitational
We knew the day would be filled with drama at the WGC Bridgestone Invitational, and we were not let down at all, as Tiger Woods once again showed why he is the greatest player on the face of the earth. Woods, trailing by three shots heading into the final round, managed to make up plenty of ground, and eventually won the tournament by an unbelievable four shots. Woods shot a 65 for today’s round, putting him at 12-under par for the week. It was all Tiger to start the day, but the tide eventually turned in favor of Padraig Harrington, [...]
Bridgestone Round 3 Recap – Tiger Makes His Run
The third round of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational has concluded, and boy, are we set up for an excellent Sunday finish at Firestone. Padraig Harrington continues to lead the tournament after shooting a 3-under 67 for today’s round. But unlike other golfers, Harrington didn’t seem to start shivering when a certain someone started charging up the leaderboard.
