$7,900 to $7,500
As is usually the case, the $7,000 dollar range is loaded with a lot of golfers, so, we’ll just break this up into two parts.
I actually didn’t notice this the first few times I looked over the list, but Phil Mickelson ($7,800) is about as cheap as I have ever seen him. I’ll be interested to know what his ownership percentage is.
I think he has been overpriced all year and now he’s finally where he needs to be, but I have no interest in Mickelson. I do see the strategy if you want to go with him as he is a highly volatile player.
With no cut, you don’t have to really worry about his bogeys and double bogeys so long as he is grabbing his fair share of birdies and eagles.
Paul Casey ($7,800) might be one of these golfers that has become fatigued down the stretch. He has had a really strong year, but he posted a T-39 at The Barclays and a missed cut at the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Casey strikes the ball well, after a week of rest I look for Casey to have a rock solid week.
Webb Simpson ($7,600) is 5th in Strokes Gained: Tee-To-Green and 29th in fairways in regulation. I like Simpson as a pretty decent little value pick.
This doesn’t matter this week, but Simpson has quietly been pretty consistent this year in terms of making the cut. In 20 tries he has made the cut in 17 tournaments this year. I’ve seen Simpson’s numbers all year long, but it just kind of hit me this week, like, wow, he actually hasn’t been all that bad this year.
Both Tony Finau ($7,600) and Justin Thomas ($7,600) are battling it out for the PGA Tour Rookie of the Year and this tournament may end up deciding on who wins.
As we talked about with Koepka, Finau and Thomas aren’t the straightest of hitters, but they score birdies and eagles in bunches.
When you are guaranteed a weekend looking for golfers that pile up the points isn’t a bad strategy. That makes someone like J.B. Holmes ($7,500) in play, as well.
