Do you want to know what the biggest downside to playing Zach Johnson in fantasy golf this week is? The fact that basically everybody else will have him in their lineups, too.

It’s not every day you find someone this solid for the bargain basement price of just $7,200. Sure, he’s 42 years old. Sure, the weather forecast looks like a green light for bombers. But Johnson has grown into a perennial Open contender, and that’s something you’d be foolish to look past.

ZJ has six top-20 finishes in the Open in the last seven years, including his 2015 win at St. Andrews. His only other career top-20 across the pond? You got it: 2007 at Carnoustie. It was his fourth Open and first time playing the weekend. Not a bad way to get a start on things.

The Iowa native’s game is in fine form heading overseas, too. After putting together a strong weekend at Shinnecock to finish tied for 12th, he opened the Travelers with a 63 en route to a T-19. Most recently, he closed the John Deere Classic going 67-64 on the weekend. The tie for 16th place was his 11th top-25 in 19 starts this year.

You might be noticing a trend in my picks here – gritty guys who will be able to handle whatever Car-nasty throws their way. Whether Mother Nature plays nice or not, look for Johnson to far outperform his relatively meager salary this week in the hunt for his second Claret Jug.
