To get this out of the way early: Louis Oosthuizen may not be 100% heading into Carnoustie. He withdrew in the first round of last week’s Scottish Open, citing a sore right shoulder. While that’s definitely a concern, it’s not enough at the moment to keep me from recommending him as a fantasy starter. Simply keep an eye on his status through the evening if you’re concerned.

Assuming that Oosthuizen is good to go, I love him as a potential star in fantasy lineups at Carnoustie this week. Yes, he’s an Open champ – from St. Andrews in 2010 – but this course just feels like it fits his game right now. Like Grace, he’s not a bomber, but he doesn’t need to be.

The 35-year-old is coming in with solid form, earning top-20 finishes in each of his last three PGA TOUR starts, including a T-5 finish in Fort Worth and a T-16 at the U.S. Open. He closed the week at Shinnecock Hills with a 69, so there’s a bit of a confidence boost there, too.

Where Oosty really shines is with his wedge work around the greens. He leads the entire PGA TOUR in scrambling (67.98%) and ranks third in sand save percentage. Granted, there are basically no bunkers on the PGA TOUR schedule that match those you see in an Open Championship, but those advantages will still carry over.

At $7,700, Louis Oosthuizen is worth the relatively small risk his shoulder is presenting right now. The potential rewards are simply far too big to pass up on.
