Webb Simpson locked up the eighth and final automatic qualifier spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team after a T19 last week at the PGA Championship.

His solid finish at Bellerive adds to an impressive list of results in 2018: A commanding win at the PLAYERS, T20 at the Masters, T10 at the U.S. Open, T12 at the Open Championship and three other top-10s. He’s missed just two cuts all year and has done no worse than T47 when he plays all four rounds.

The dude’s just been steady, which was his trademark before having to abandon his anchored putter. After a rough 2016, Simpson began putting it together last year and is now flourishing.

The Raleigh native has a good chance to cash another big check this week in his home state.

Simpson won the 2011 Wyndham Championship and was the 36-hole co-leader before finishing solo third. He missed the cut in his debut in 2009 but has since made eight weekends in a row with five top-10s and two more top-25s.

He shot 28 on the front nine on Thursday last year.

"“You know, we’re obviously close to where I grew up. I grew up playing courses similar to this that aren’t too long, hit different clubs off the tee, some doglegs,” Simpson said last year. “So, there’s a comfort here that I feel like I don’t have at a lot of places. I’ve always loved playing close to home.”"

The 33-year-old is 19th on Tour in strokes gained on approaches. He’s a whopping sixth in SG putting, up from 88th last season.

He’s ninth in proximity from 50-125 yards and 12th in par-4 scoring. Simpson isn’t known as a birdie maker, but his 61 this year at the Greenbrier shows he can pick his spots to go low.
