European Tour: South African Open Power Rankings
By Matt Coles
The first man to make our list this week is England’s Andy Sullivan, who will be making his first appearance on the European Tour in 2020.
The Englishman has fond memories of this event, having won the South African Open in 2015 when it was held at Glendower GC, as he defeated Charl Schwartzel on a playoff to win his first-ever European Tour title, in what would become his breakthrough season on Tour.
Sullivan went on to then win the Joburg Open and the Portugal Masters that same year, as he made his move up the Official World Golf Rankings, and was able to qualify for the 2016 Ryder Cup at Hazeltine.
The Englishman has been as high as World No.28. and ended the 2019 European Tour season in 44th on the Race to Dubai list, thanks to a T2 finish at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, along with top-ten finishes at the Maybank Championship, Portugal Masters, and the season-ending DP World Tour Championship.
This will be his first appearance of the new season, having taken a six-week break after the DP to recharge and prepare for the new season. He may not be in the form of his life, but having won this event in the past, Sullivan is a good shout for glory this week in Johannesburg.
