2022 Memorial Tournament: Top 10 Power Rankings at Muirfield Village
A win in his first trip to Muirfield Village in 2014 set the tone for repeated success on this property for Hideki Matsuyama.
Japan’s top golfer fired 70-67-69-69 and edged Kevin Na in a playoff for his first career PGA Tour victory. Matsuyama defended his title well, taking T-5th (64-71-71-70) in 2015.
In nine starts at Muirfield Village, he’s made seven cuts with four top-13 finishes, including sixth (71-70-64-72) in 2019. Last year, Matsuyama took T-62nd (73-68-79-76).
“It’s really a hard, difficult golf course,” Matsuyama was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2015. It’s not one that you’d like, but it is‑‑ the fairways are a little wider than some of the courses. And it’s a real good second‑shot golf course that plays into my strength.”
He seeks his third PGA Tour win of the season this week at the Memorial Tournament
That would join him with Scottie Scheffler as the lone players with three-plus victories in 2021-22.
Matsuyama prevailed at the Zozo Championship and Sony Open to go with a T-3rd recently at the AT&T Byron Nelson. Discounting an injury withdrawal at the Valero Texas Open, he’s made 11 cuts in a row going back to August.
The 30-year-old is annually one of the best ball strikers out there. That’s the case this season once again as he’s 19th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained tee to green (1.203). He hits tons of greens (69.81%, 12th) and will try to brush enough in with his balky putting stroke.
Matsuyama is eighth in birdie average (4.43) and 19th in scoring average (70.059).
