2022 Memorial Tournament: Top 10 Power Rankings at Muirfield Village
Given his course history at Muirfield Village, I can’t pick Jordan Spieth to win this week. Given his recent form, I can’t avoid picking Spieth to at least record another top-10.
The Texan played well in his home state last week to finish T-7th at the Charles Schwab Challenge where he’s a former champion. Four rounds of par or better at Colonial allowed Spieth to earn his third top-10 in his last four starts. That stretch includes a win at the RBC Heritage and a runner-up finish by one shot at the AT&T Byron Nelson.
He’s made four cuts in a row and five of his last six.
Spieth is making his ninth start at Muirfield Village. The 28-year-old’s made six cuts highlighted by T-3rd in 2015.
“It’s one of the kind of most fun, most difficult but purest tracks that we play all year, even with most every single hole being changed it seems like it’s still that way, which is pretty remarkable in a year’s time,” Spieth was transcribed by ASAP Sports in 2021. “And it’s a golf course where you just can’t, you can’t fake anything.”
Spieth has two top-20s in a row at the Memorial Tournament.
At the 2021 Memorial, he bounced back from an opening 76 with 67-71-73 to finish T-18th. He ranked between 21st and 41st in every strokes gained category.
Spieth traditionally hasn’t been the best ball-striker, which is a reason why he hasn’t had his usual success at a venue like this that prioritizes it. Now, it’s become the strength of his game as his putting stroke has gone cold.
The former Texas Longhorn ranks seventh on the PGA Tour in SG tee to green (1.438) and is in the top 25 off the tee, approach, and around the green. The par-5s at Muirfield have become a little less gettable after the redesign, but the added firepower to his game could help him find chances. He’s third in par-5 scoring on the season (4.44).
