In just three starts at Muirfield Village, Collin Morikawa already boasts a win and a runner-up. In his first appearance, he shot 65-66-72-66, which was good enough to get into a playoff with Justin Thomas who stumbled down the stretch.

Morikawa took advantage, ousting JT on the third extra hole. Despite ranking 80th in the field in strokes gained around the green (0.063), he struck the ball well enough for it not to be a detriment, coming in at third in SG approach (9.211) and third in SG tee to green (12.807).

Morikawa couldn’t pull off the Muirfield Village double-dip in 2020 when it hosted consecutive events. He took T-48th at the 2020 Memorial.

However, he got right back in the mix at the 2021 Memorial where he took second place (66-72-66-71). Playoff fortune didn’t go his way this time as Patrick Cantlay won it on the first extra hole. Morikawa only found two bunkers all week and got up and down each time. He was top-25 in every SG category.

Muirfield Village is a comfortable venue for Morikawa.

“From the moment I stepped on this course, I kind of fell in love,” Morikawa was quoted by ASAP Sports before the 2020 Memorial. “I thought a lot of tee shots fit my eye, everything, approach shots, so I knew it was going to be a really good course, whether I played well or not.”

The 25-year-old is hopeful a return to Ohio will kickstart his game. Morikawa has made his last six cuts, but hasn’t cracked the top-25 in his last three outings.

The Cal alum has six top-10s in the 2021-22 PGA Tour season, including T-2nd in his home state’s Genesis Invitational.

Morikawa ranks fifth on the PGA Tour in SG approach (.825) and fourth in proximity from the fairway (29’).
