Why Should I Care About Tiger’s Mess Anymore?
By Blake Lovell
Like most golf fans, I’ve had enough of this Tiger Woods drama. Like seriously. I do not care anymore. Why, you may ask? Because it just doesn’t offer me any sort of reason to create a new opinion on the whole thing. So when Vanity Fair released their story (link contains partial nudity) on the whole situation, forgive me if I didn’t jump up and say “this is outrageous!”
Today we are introduced to new little tidbits, such as Tiger’s agent Mark Steinberg knowing about the affairs when Tiger clearly stated that no one inside his circle knew about all of this. And then there’s the tie-ins with Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, and the talks about them being terrible role models for Tiger. And this Mindy Lawton gives her Tiger affair story, which offers up absolutely nothing that makes me think any differently of the situation. Oh, and the article apparently breaks a monumental story in claiming that Tiger Woods is cheap. Ummm, and I care why?
We’ve been here before. When the first story came out regarding Woods’ infidelity, we thought that was it. Then the next story came out. And then the next one. And so on. This story isn’t going to die any time soon, and I’ve accepted that. But that doesn’t mean that I have to continue piling on Woods every single time some new piece of information is presented to the public (which to our knowledge, may or may not be factual since we can only go on the word of the entity that is presenting the information to us). That doesn’t mean that I have to repeat my opinion over and over again just because another woman comes out with a different story. Do I honestly think this will be the last woman to come out and give us another affair to talk about? I highly doubt it.
But again, some media outlets are jumping and pushing the idea that Tiger may have lied to us in his statement when claiming that no one knew of his transgressions (aside from the women involved, of course) and trying to make this some big story. And to that, I say this: what is your point? So basically, from what I can gather, you’re saying that a guy who was living a lie for a long time may have actually lied to us a little bit? Wow, really? At this time, I think it’s safe to say that Tiger’s credibility is shot just a little bit, so if he said this to protect others around him, it’s not all that shocking. If Steinberg did know, what does that change?
Look, what he did wasn’t right. I’m in complete agreement with everyone about that. He made some really bad choices, and it has affected his live in a monumental way. But if all we’re going to get out of this new information that continues to come out is another affair story, or opinions that Tiger is cheap, then I simply don’t care. The damage has been done.
There will be golf fans that forgive him. There will be golf fans that will never forgive him. There’s really no middle ground there. Unless something completely outrageous and illegal comes out, it’s not going to change the way I view this situation. Tiger created an absolute mess of his life, and now he’s trying to get back on the right track. I get it. I don’t need to view every single news story from here on out as something that makes this situation so much worse. Because it doesn’t.
Each individual woman’s story will be different, and they’ll all have different things to say. However, they are all tied together by one common theme: they all slept with a married man who happened to be one of the (if not THE) most famous athletes in the world. That’s all I need to know about these women. They are just as guilty as he is. I don’t need to hear about each woman’s love for him, and their sadness over the fact that it didn’t work out. It’s not hard for all of us to understand why it didn’t turn into a “long-lasting relationship.”
We could say that it’s good that Tiger is almost back on the course, so that all of this will continue to fade away. Well, it won’t. All the attention will be on him next week at Augusta, and that attention will likely include people who have never watched a round of golf in their life before. He will be the focus of every large media outlet, and even though the officials at the Masters are strict as to who they let in media-wise, there will be stories, and plenty of them from those who don’t make it onto the grounds at Augusta.
So would it surprise me to see another story from another woman come out next week, just as Tiger is back on the map of millions around the world? Not one bit. But you can bet that if another one does surface, that it’ll get the attention of everyone. And maybe we will have embarked on a new reason to take our opinion one way or the other.
If it’s more stuff like this Vanity Fair piece though, I won’t care. My stance will stay the same. I’m a golf fan, and I want to watch Tiger play golf. I’m already fully aware that he cheated on his wife, and don’t care to hear each woman’s opinion on him.
It happened. Let’s move on.
