2015 Humana Challenge Fantasy Sleeper Picks
By Danny Norris
The PGA Tour is back in the mainland this week and it should be a fun tournament. The 2015 Humana Challenge is one of the events where the golfers can get a plethora of birdies and eagles.
It’s also a stronger-than-usual field which gives the Humana a little bit more buzz. The biggest buzz is, of course, Phil Mickelson making his debut this year. With the field above-average it gives us plenty of options for some sleeper picks this week which will make the tournament all the more interesting.

We knocked the rust off last week and continued the momentum we had last year with some really good picks last week. Which featured three golfers that were in contention in Daniel Summerhays, Brian Harman, and Jason Kokrak.
Let’s see if we can take that momentum into the Humana Challenge this week. With that said, let’s get to some under-the-radar picks to keep an eye on this week.
Daniel Summerhays– Daniel Summerhays was massively undervalued last week and he proved that. Summerhays was a great pick up and a fantastic value pick. This week, the market has rightfully corrected on Summerhays, but he still has a lot of value. Summerhays is playing some great golf right now as he’s 6-for-6 in cuts made including a T-17 last week at the Sony Open.
Plus, Summerhays is 3-for-3 at the Humana Challenge in his career which includes a T-58 last year, T-27 in 2013, and T-11 in 2011. Summerhays looks like a must play again this week.
Cameron Tringale– Like Daniel Sumerhays, Cameron Tringale is one of the better golfers on the PGA Tour with a victory in his career. He has struggled so far this year, but at the Humana, Tringale is typically very solid. He has made the cut four times in as many attempts including a T-38 last year, T-37 in 2013, and T-20 in 2012.
A really cheap pick up that should do well as your number five or number six golfer in your lineup.
Bo Van Pelt– Bo Van Pelt was in a funk for the majority of last year, but something clicked for him towards the end of the year. In his last eleven tournaments, Bo Van Pelt made the cut in ten tournaments. Earlier in that same year, Van Pelt was in a major slump where he missed the cut in five straight tournaments.
So, it was a nice turnaround for Van Pelt and that has carried over to this year. In four tournaments, Van Pelt has made the cut in three of those tournaments including a T-25 at Sanderson Farms Championship.
Bo Van Pelt’s swing is coming back and Van pelt has a good history at Humana. Going back to 2009, Van Pelt has made the cut in five of six tournaments including a T-5 in 2009, and he did finish T-48th last year and that was right around the time his game was way off. His game is back and so a top 20-35 isn’t out of the question.
Brendan Steele– I decided to add Brendan Steele just because he has the most value this week. I’m not that high on him, but given the fact that he’s so cheap that I had to add him on. Steele is a very quality golfer that hangs around and makes a lot of cuts.
So far this year he is four-for-four in cuts made with three tournaments inside the top 37. He doesn’t have the greatest history at Humana, in fact, it’s pretty bad. His best finish has been a T-66 which was in 2013 and 2012.
History isn’t exactly on Steele’s side and he may not be worth the risk to take, but just looking at his salary if you want to go with the “stars & scrubs” approach this week, grabbing Steele at 5,700 isn’t a bad deal. Again, Steele is a really solid, steady golfer who is typically reliable week in and week out. Maybe this will be the year he puts it all together at the Humana Challenge.
Pat Perez– I’m not gaga over Pat Perez this week, but he’s worth a look at. Perez is someone to take a flyer on if you need that one last golfer to round out your team. Perez has been in a slump going back to the second half of last year, but he may be coming out of it.
To start the 2014-2015 year Perez missed back-to-back cuts at the Frys.com Open and Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Perez has bounced back with three straight made cuts including a T-17 last week.
Plus, Perez has a solid history at the Humana Challenge making the cut in five of six tournaments including a win back in 2009. Perez might be getting hot so keep an eye on Perez this week.
