Robert Allenby’s Bizarre Press Conference
While the sports world is glued to the circus atmosphere surrounding Marshawn Lynch’s media sessions at the Super Bowl, did you happen to catch Robert Allenby’s presser yesterday? Unlike Lynch, Allenby isn’t forced to meet the media, he decided to do so on his own accord. He then went on to give us one of the most bizarre press conferences you will ever see. After it was over we were left wondering what did that actually accomplished?

Allenby’s past few weeks have been frightening and confusing. First Golf Channel reported that he was kidnapped and robbed on the Friday night of the Sony Open. They did this after obtaining a picture of Allenby’s bruised and battered face after the alleged attack. Allenby told us yesterday that he has no idea how that picture even ended in the network’s hands. Last night on Golf Channel’s Golf Central, they said they were given the photo by a source close to Allenby. Then there were reports that surfaced this week that Allenby spent nearly $4,000 at a strip club that night and he then told us that he couldn’t remember anything from a two hour time span in the middle of the night. Sounds like I’m listening to guys tell me they have no idea how footballs magically deflated.
Allenby’s press conference did nothing to help connect the dots of his story and he now has gone from a sympathetic figure to skeptical one. When the assembled media gathered to hear what he had to say they found out that apparently this is all their fault.
“My story stays the same as the way I told it. I told you what I knew and I told you what someone had told me and that’s the bottom line. I never lied to anyone, I only told you what I knew. From that the media has decided they’re some kind of experts of investigation.” Credit PGATour.com.
He then went on to say that he no longer has any friends in the media other than one person. Prior to this he declared that he would take full responsibility if he did something wrong and that he could take it. So to sum everything up here, Allenby is strong enough to take it on the chin and take the blame, but really this is all the media’s fault. Yea that makes complete sense.
What happened to Allenby is frightening. If he really was drugged, kidnapped and dragged throughout the island for a terrorizing two hours then I feel for him. Until the investigation comes to a conclusion and the facts of the case come out I can’t give him the benefit of the doubt. To stand up there and scold the media who were there because he asked him be, is classless and wrong. You would think that he’d want them to help get the true story out. Now the last thing any of them will do is give him the benefit of the doubt, and they shouldn’t.
You ever see the movie Gladiator? There’s a scene where Russell Crowe’s character Maximus is speaking with Proximo and he tells Maximus “win the crowd and you will win you’re freedom.” Allenby had a chance to do that yesterday. With all these stories swirling around him he had a chance to squash them all and be the guy we want to root for. Instead he failed, and failed as dramatically as he possibly could. I hope for his sake he’s telling the truth because if not there will be no one there to bail him out. Especially the media because remember if there’s one thing we learned from this presser, this is all their fault.
