Tiger Woods vs Rory McIlroy
By Sam Adams
This is a little different take on Tiger Woods vs Rory McIlroy.
With the approach of the 2015 Masters Tournament next week social media is like two teenage girls tweeting about Prom Night. Every site I visit or news feed that I check is full of posts about the speculation on Tiger Woods and whether or not he will play, or in some cases, whether or not he should even play.

Lost in all the hype is the fact that Rory McIlroy is going for a career grand slam. By winning the Masters he will have won all four majors by the age of 25 completing the Career Grand Slam. He will become only one of six players to ever accomplish that feat. He will join Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods in a very elite club. He is also going for his third major in a row.
Rory is ranked as the No. 1 player in the world and is the odds on favorite to win the Masters at 6 to 1. Jason Day and Jordan Spieth are in second place at 15 to1 odds. Tiger is somewhere south of 50 to 1 if he plays. Personally I’m thinking more in the 50 to 1 range for making the cut if he plays. Reportedly Augusta has installed a portable screen that can be rolled around to prevent Tiger’s shanks from hurting anyone else. It brings to mind scenes from the movie “Tin Cup” rater than the Masters. I hope that it is not true, but it is very difficult to determine what is fact or fiction on the internet and social media today.
My point here is that it is hard to find anything in the media about Rory squeezed in among all the speculation about Tiger and I think that is really sad. He and the other young guys that actually have a reasonable chance should be the real story. Let’s see what next week brings.
“I want to try to become the best golfer in the world.”Rory Mcilroy
So far Rory has handled it extremely well, but he has to be thinking “what do I have to do to get some respect”.
The other sad fact is that since the Masters is an invitational, Tiger doesn’t even have to actually commit. He just has to show up for his tee time. Hopefully he will have enough respect for the event to let the officials know in advance.
The Tiger is also drowning out another really interesting story. Lydia Ko. The 17 year old LPGA darling is going for a record of her own. She has 28 consecutive rounds under par which is just one shy of the record held by the legendary Annika Sorenstam, a 10-time major winner. She has never missed a cut in her career as either an amateur or professional and she became the youngest player to surpass $1 million and $2 million in career earnings. She is now trying to get her first career major before turning 18 later this month at the ANA Inspiration which starts this week.
These are interesting times in golf today with so many great young players and stories on both the PGA Tour and the LPGA Tour that are not getting the publicity they deserve because of the Tiger stories. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t blame Tiger for this. It is certainly not his fault and I’m sure he wishes it would go away, but there is one thing he can do to make most of it go away and that is commit to playing in the Masters or coming out and saying that he is not going to play.
I hope he plays and plays well, but, in the meantime I’m really getting tired of it. It’s time to move on.
