Mi Jung Hur is the top-ranked putter in the 2015 US Women’s Open field. Ranked 65th by Rolex, Hur is playing her 6th year on the Tour. She has 12 career top-10 finishes that include wins at the 2009 Safeway Classic and the 2014 Yokohama tire LPGA Classic, but she has no top-10 finishes on her 2015 resume.
With a 72nd place finish at the ANA Inspiration and a T32 at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, I don’t look for Hur to challenge the top of the board this week.
Clearly, command of the flat stick is crucial and poor putters don’t win golf tournaments, but putting alone doesn’t win golf tournaments either. It’s instructive that none of the past US Women’s Open champions in the 2015 field are among the Tour’s top-ranked putters, yet I see several of these past champions as also in contention this year.
