Best – Jordan Spieth

Was there even any doubt who the best golfer was this year? Jordan Spieth had by far the best major seasons out of anyone on TOUR. In fact, he had one of the best major season in golf history. I don’t even know where to begin with this one.

Let’s start at Augusta where he damn near broke every record, most of which were held by Tiger Woods. He set the record for best 36-hole score (-14), 54-hole score (-16), and tied the best 72-hole record (-18) in Masters history. He also set the record for most birdies at one Masters with 26 and became the only man to reach -19 at the Masters.

He had so much fun winning his first major that he figured he’d do it again at the U.S. Open. Spieth opened at Chambers Bay with a 2-under and would do one better in the second round, posting a -3 to tie Patrick Reed for the 36-hole lead. It was a lead he wouldn’t let go of.

Thanks to a Dustin Johnson collapse, Spieth won the U.S. Open and the first two majors of the year, becoming the sixth player in history to do so and the first since Tiger Woods in 2002.

From there, the 21 year old headed across the pond to St. Andrews where he was looking to make even more history. With a win, he would become only the second player to win the first three majors of the season, something done only by the great Ben Hogan.

  • While it wasn’t meant to be, the Texan still tied for fourth after just missing out on a playoff by inches. 1-1-T4 is one hell of a way to start the major season.

Whistling Straits awaited the Golden Child next, but it never stood a chance. Spieth had a slow start with a 71, but followed that up with three consecutive rounds in the 60s. Spieth shot a bogey-free 65 in his third round, in which he birdied six of his last eight holes.

Entering the final round paired with Jason Day, Spieth simply couldn’t catch the Aussie, who played fantastic golf. The young lad finished in solo second place and with it took over the number one world ranking.

In his epic major season, Spieth broke Tiger’s total scoring record of -53 with -54 and he shot 65.1 strokes better than the field. One of the most impressive stats of his major dominance: Jordan Spieth beat 99.1% of his competitors in the four majors this season.
