Ian Poulter has had a tendency in his career to play the best when the spotlight is at its brightest. Poulter only has two career PGA Tour wins, but both of those were WGC-events. And, of course, Poulter is one of the greatest Ryder Cup players of all-time leading Europe to wins in 2004, 2010, 2012, and 2014.
That’s why it’s so interesting that he has yet to notch a major championship in his career.
Now, don’t twist it in such a way that Poulter hasn’t been successful at majors – he has. Poulter has made the cut in 40 of 52 majors in his career and has finished inside the top ten in eight of those tournaments.
At the 2008 Open Championship, Greg Norman lead heading into the final round. Poulter started off six shots behind him and four shots behind the eventual winner in Padraig Harrington.
Poulter gave it a major run as he finished strong birding 9, 11, and 16. However, Harrington closed strong as well birding 13, 15, and eagling 17 to seal the deal.
In 2013, again at The Open, Poulter had a strong final round, but started a little too far back. Poulter started off eight shots behind Westwood and three shots behind the eventual winner in Mickelson.
Poulter was 5-over par to start the round and eventually got it down as low as even-par. Poulter would go on to shoot a 67 on Sunday. That would put him at 1-over for the tournament and good enough to get a share of second place, four shots behind Mickelson.
After a very shaky 2014, Poulter bounced back and put himself in contention in a few tournaments in 2015. Most importantly, Poulter finished in the top ten at a major finishing T-6 at The Masters.
