Fans love nothing more than to watch the biggest stars in golf compete in the biggest PGA events, but an unfortunate ankle injury forced McIlroy to miss several big tournaments including the Open Championship.

The 26-year-old star was coming off five consecutive top-10 finishes before being forced to miss a month of action. In eight events (prior to the injury), McIlroy had six top-10 finishes and two PGA victories.

With only four majors each year, it’s always a disappointment when one of the game’s best players is forced to miss any of these few events. After missing the Open Championship, McIlroy was fortunately able to participate at the PGA Championship, but failed to crack the top 10, finishing seventeenth. He finished the season without a major victory for the first time since 2013.
