Payne Stewart Award: From Arnie Palmer to Ernie Els
2006: Gary Player
Gary Player has 24 wins on the PGA Tour, including an astonishing 9 major championships. His illustrious career is often dwarfed by his charitable donations off the course.
Player founded the Player Foundation, an organization focused on educating the less fortunate in South Africa. The Blair Atholl Schools in Johannesburg, South Africa has more than 500 students from grades K-7.
When Player teamed with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus, the giving continued. In 2010 at a charity golf tournament, the Big Three helped raise over $15 million dollars for the Mountain Mission School. The school has sheltered and educated an estimated 20,000 children in its 87 years of existence.
