The Evian Championship, The Magnificent Seven (Video)
Yani Tseng was not on my radar when I started thinking about The Evian a month or so ago. Although I’ve seen occasional glimpses during the first half of the season of the game that put her at the top of the world rankings for 109 consecutive weeks from 2011-2013, Tseng couldn’t seem to hold on to that game. It would appear, and then it would dissipate.
She missed the cut at the ANA Inspiration, at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, and then again at the US Women’s Open. But something clicked into place for Tseng at the RICOH Women’s British Open. She delivered four solid, consistent rounds of golf under very challenging conditions and she finished T13.
Then some sheer magic unfolded at the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic. Tseng’s Mighty Girl drive was back and she played with energetic joy. Her approaches accomplished the impossible. She went for the pin when others laid up. Her putts were dropping.
If Yani has found her game — and that would certainly appear to be the case — and if she can hold on to it, I’m looking for her to challenge the top of the board. If the old Yani is back, she’ll be impossible to beat.
