  • While there are a number of story lines unfolding, few of them focus on the rookies.  That might be a mistake, given Hyo Joo Kim’s spectacular play at the 2014 Evian Championship.

The then 19-year old KLPGA member was making her second Evian appearance.  She stepped onto the big stage and opened the tournament with a 61 in the first round, a major record for any male or female player. Kim’s stunning effort set the tone for the entire week and would carry the teenager to a one-shot lead over World Golf and LPGA Halls of Famer Karrie Webb going into the final round.

Kim and Webb battled throughout the day on Sunday and Webb seemed — at least to me — poised to win her eighth career major title. She held a one-shot lead heading to the 72nd hole but Kim sank a 12-foot birdie putt to pull even at 11-under par. Webb hit a tricky greenside chip shot 10 feet past the hole, failed to convert on the par putt and saw the victory slip from her hands.

It was a win neither fans nor commentators nor oddsmakers had seen coming.  This year there are three Evian rookie standouts getting ready to tee it up who are also long shots to win, but I’m putting all three of them on my first round watch list.  I’m looking for all of them to get in the mix and stay there and I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see one of them hoisting the trophy on Sunday.

    Let’s take a look.
