Jason Day Runs Away with the BMW Championship
By Matt Cochran
Three months ago he was No. 10 on the Official World Golf Ranking. Now he is No. 1 and by far the hottest golfer on the planet. Jason Day won the BMW Championship on Sunday with a score of -22, six strokes better than the second place finisher Daniel Berger.

Day started his dominance in the first round by flirting with a 59, but finishing with a 61 to take a four stroke lead. From there he continued to build on his lead throughout the weekend and never gave anyone a chance.
With the win, Day became the second wire-to-wire winner this season and is the the fifth golfer since 2003 to win five or more times in a season. He also becomes the No. 1 golfer in the world for the first time in his career.
The Aussie entered the final round with a six-shot lead and didn’t really need to do anything besides make pars in order to walk away with the trophy. He did just that.
Day parred his first seven holes before getting his first birdie of the day at the 600-yard 8th hole, but he gave it back with a bogey on the 9th hole and finished even par for his front nine. He continued to play par golf on the back nine until some late round heroics on the 16th.
After putting his drive in the gallery on the left side of the fairway, Day knocked his approach on the fringe for a 15-foot birdie putt. He drained his birdie putt, letting out an emotional fist pump knowing he was just moments away from his fifth win of the season.
He parred the par-3 17th hole and headed to the par-5 finishing hole. Jason piped a 315-yard drive in the middle of the fairway and put his approach shot in the rough on the left side of the green from 273 yards out. Capping off his round in fashion, the Aussie birdied the hole and won the third leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs.
With his win, Day becomes the third player to win two of the first three playoff events since they started in 2007. He’ll enter the TOUR Championship next week first place in the FedEx Cup standings. The points reset for the final event of the playoffs, giving any of the top 30 players an opportunity to win the $10 million prize.
“I’m just a regular guy, like everyone else. I’m just proof that if you stick with your dreams, you can accomplish them.” -Jason Day
Unfortunately for the other 29 golfers, Jason Day is playing the best golf of his career at the current moment. In his last six starts, Day has won four times and has top 12 finishes in the other two tournaments that he didn’t win. Some golfers don’t even get four wins in their career and Day has done it in his last six attempts.
The magnitude of Jason’s performance this season is even starting to draw comparisons to the Tiger Woods of 2000. Johnny Miller went so far as to say, “I actually think he’s playing superior golf to Tiger in 2000, as far as shooting low scores.”
Of the 19 events Day has started in this year, he’s finished top 25 in 14 of them. He’s also 47-under par in the first three playoff events so far.
The final event of the postseason takes place at the TOUR Championship in Atlanta, Georgia next week. Jason Day enters as the heavy favorite to win the FedEx Cup. As for the other golfers, may God have mercy on their souls.
