Player of the Year
Jordan Spieth
Was there ever any doubt? Even when Jason Day was busy stringing together his own run for Player of the Year, he still wasn’t close to Jordan Spieth.
Winner of the first two majors of the season, Spieth was on cruise control throughout the year. He set the record for best 36-hole and 54-hole record at the Masters and tied the 72-hole record at -18. He single-handedly broke the record for most birdies at a Masters as well.
Spieth was the only player in Masters history to reach 19-under. He’s the second person in 100 years to go wire-to-wire at a major as a 21 year old and the first since 1976 to go wire-to-wire at Augusta National.
He followed up that impressive major performance with another victory at Chambers Bay to win the first two majors of the season. While he didn’t win the other two majors, he still placed T-4 at The Open Championship and solo second at the PGA Championship.
His collective score at the four majors this is the lowest of any golfer in a single season. Out of the 406 golfers Spieth faced in majors, he beat 402 of them. That means he beat 99% of golfers at majors this season.
Besides his showing at majors, Spieth carved up his competition in the regular season events as well. He won a total of six times, one of them being at the Hero World Challenge, an unofficial PGA TOUR event. He recorded 15 top 10 finishes and made 21 cuts out of 25 tries.
His $12,030,465 (which doesn’t include the $10 million for the FedEx Cup) is the most earnings of a single season in PGA TOUR history.
Spieth is the youngest player to win 5+ times since 1929, the youngest to win two career majors since 1922, the youngest to win the Masters and U.S. Open in a career, and the second youngest player to reach No. 1 golfer in the world next to Tiger Woods.
It may take a while to wrap your head around all of these accomplishments, but it’s safe to say that no one had quite the season that Jordan Spieth had in 2015.
