Young Golfers To Keep An Eye
Last week, I went over a preview of the rookie golfers this year. As I stated in the piece, if I had to make a pick, Emiliano Grillo would have been my pick to win the Rookie of the Year award.
However, I highlighted Harold Varner III ($6,100), Michael Kim ($5,700), Bronson Burgoon ($5,500) and Smylie Kaufman ($6,200) as dark horse candidates to keep your eye on.
Burgoon just missed the cut last week, but the other three all had a lot of bright moments at the Frys.com Open. Varner III and Kim had hot starts, but Kim fell off on the weekend, while Varner tumbled down the leaderboard on Sunday. Kaufman was steady and ended up finishing in the top ten.
All in all, it was a good start for the three and if I had to take just one this week, I would go with Varner III. He has top ten potential this week given how far he bombs it off the tee and with greens being friendly.
Ollie Schniederjans ($6,800) is a buy low golfer while you still can. Schniederjans has so much potential and is so talented that he is too good not to grab at this price point.
This is the part of the year where talent shines, for the most part. The courses aren’t the hardest and the fields aren’t the strongest. When we get into the heart of the season, maybe lay off the “Hatless Wonder” but until then you don’t have to worry. Schniederjans should make the cut and have a quality finish this week.
