Steve Williams: The $8.8 Million Slave
By Matt Cochran
Stevie Williams never was the most likable caddie on TOUR. No surprise that he’s added more criticism with recent comments he made in his new autobiography “Out of the Rough,” which hit bookstores on November 2.
Williams has been in partial retirement for about a year now, but it seems like the ex-looper is already getting bored with himself because he had to come out with an autobiography to document his time as Tiger Woods’ former caddie.
As you can imagine, Stevie says plenty of things to attack his former boss, but the comments that got most people fired up was when he compared his life working for Tiger Woods as that of a slave.
"“One thing that really p—ed me off was how he would flippantly toss a club in the general direction of the bag, expecting me to go over and pick it up. I felt uneasy about bending down to pick up his discarded club – it was like I was his slave.”"
I don’t even have to begin to explain how blasphemous Williams’ comparison really is. It’s almost humorous how Williams describes the “horrible conditions” he was put through.
He says he felt “uneasy about bending down to pick up his discarded club.” I’m sorry Stevie, but isn’t your job as a caddie to carry his clubs and clean up after him? Was Stevie forced into life as an indentured caddie?
Business Insider did some math to pinpoint just how much Steve Williams made during his 12 years with Tiger and they point out that he made around $8.8 million. That’s right, Williams made more money in his time with Tiger than a normal caddie would even come close to making in his entire career.
I understand Tiger Woods isn’t the most likable character on the PGA TOUR, but did he really mistreat poor Steve Williams? No he didn’t and it’s absurd to even think that in the first place. Have you ever met a millionaire who was treated like a slave?
Who exactly was Steve Williams before Big Cat came along? Sure he looped for the likes of Peter Jacobson, Ian Baker-Finch, Greg Norman, and Raymond Floyd, but how much success did he have with those guys? Obviously not a lot if he was bouncing around from golfer to golfer.

Tiger Woods made Steve Williams who he is. Stevie’s career as a caddie is nothing without Eldrick in the picture. To say that you felt like a slave after someone made you over $8 million in 12 years shows how ignorant of a person you really are.
Before you go around calling out others for how they treat you, why don’t you take a look at yourself Steve Williams. There wasn’t a round that went by where you weren’t screaming at fans in the crowd or ripping a camera out of someone’s hands.
Williams also attacked a number of players on the PGA TOUR that he doesn’t like. Weird, right? Williams criticizes Phil Mickelson’s character, Kevin Na’s slow play, Sergio Garcia’s conduct at the 2012 PLAYERS Championship, and Vijay Singh’s cheating incident in 1985.

It was a peaceful time without having to hear from Steve Williams and his loud mouth, but it seems like retirement is getting the best of him. Is he getting bored? Has he already blown through his $8 million in earnings?
In no way were you a slave, Stevie. Nothing was stopping you from leaving. The only thing you were a slave to was the money Tiger was making you. Now you’re trying to make even more money off the man who gave you life. Do us a favor, Steve; don’t write anymore books.
