Els won a playoff in the 1994 U.S. Open to earn an opportunity to play for a number of years as an exempt player on the PGA Tour. Els has 70 worldwide victories with two U.S. Opens, and two British Opens, the two tournaments with the longest histories in golf. He has won on all continents where golf is played.
In 1994, in his first U.S. major, Els won the U.S. Open at Oakmont which went into a three-man playoff with Loren Roberts and Colin Montgomerie.
Els won the European Order of Merit twice, in 2003 and 2004, while playing full time on the PGA Tour. He has been No. 1 in the world rankings. He won the World Match Play Championship seven times. He was in the Dunhill Cup nine times, the Presidents Cup eight times and the World Cup five times.
