29. Byron Nelson
Nelson is one of the legends of golf. His 64 US professional wins were punctuated by a 1945 season in which he won 11 tournaments in a row and 18 during the year, two feats which have never been matched by any other player. They are unlikely to be matched ever. The next year, after winning six tournaments, he retired. Nelson’s swing is said to be the model for the Iron Byron machine that is used to tests golf clubs.
Nelson caddied at the same club in Fort Worth as Ben Hogan: Glen Garden. The two of them played several caddie matches against each other. Nelson,, though had success earlier than Hogan did.
Nelson won the Masters twice, in 1937 and in 1942. He won the U.S. Open in 1939. He won the PGA in 1940 and 1945. His last victory was the 1951 Bing Crosby Pro-Am. However, he was retired from active play after 1946.
