8. Babe Zaharias
Zaharias was known as Babe throughout her career. She began her sports career as a basketball and track and field star. Zaharias was so good that she won two golf medals and one silver medal in the 1932 Olympics.
In 1935 she took up golf but was denied amateur status. So she found a way to enter the 1938 L.A. Open where she missed the cut. She also made the 36-hole cuts in subsequent years in Los Angeles, Tucson and Phoenix and got into the events through 36-hole qualifiers.
After getting her amateur status back, she won the Women’s Western Open, considered a major then, three times. She turned pro again and won six other majors: Three U.S. Opens, three Titleholders and one more Women’s Western Open.
Zaharias went on to win 48 worldwide events, 41 in the U.S. and became a founder of the LPGA. She won ten majors.
