4. Mickey Wright

Mickey Wright didn’t just play golf, she dominated it, at least for a few years in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Wright won 13 major championships and had victories in 14 straight seasons, the best of which was 1963, when she won 13 times. It’s still and LPGA record. She was in demand by public, golf fans and tournament directors. It wore her down, and she finally stepped off the professional stage.

Wright’s professional career began after she lost the 1954 U.S. Women’s Amateur but won the 1954 World Amateur. Her first victory was the 1956 Jacksonville Open. After that, there were only two seasons when she didn’t win three or more events.

In 1961 she won seven. In 1962 it was eight. In 1963, it was the record-braking 13. In 1964, she won 10. In 1966, it was six. In 1967 it was four as it was in 1968. Her last LPGA victory was the 1973 Colgate-Dinah Shore Winner’s Circle.

And that doesn’t count her majors. She dominated there as well: LPGA Championship: 1958, 1960, 1961, 1963. U.S. Women’s Open: 1958, 1959, 1961, 1964. Titleholders Championship: 1961, 1962. Women’s Western Open: 1962, 1963, 1966.

Wright won 82 LGPA events and 91 tournaments worldwide in all. Her swing is still said to be one of the best ever in golf.
