11. 1999 PGA Championship

We talked earlier about the Tiger-Sergio rivalry if you can call it that. The 1999 PGA Championship was one of the greatest showdowns between the two golfers and it happened in their prime. It was the start of many encounters between the two superstars.

Garcia was the youngest player to participate in a PGA Championship since Gene Sarazen in 1921. The Spaniard took the first-round lead with an opening 66, but little did he know that Tiger was on the prowl.

Sergio fell in the second round with a 73 while Eldrick fired off a 67 to move into second place and within one shot of the lead. After the third round, Tiger was tied for first place while Garcia moved within two shots in second place.

Not many can forget Sergio’s famous leap, which game on the back nine of his final round. Garcia hit a shot from the base of a tree that miraculously made it to the 16th green, and he made par while Woods bogeyed the hole to watch his lead decrease to one.

Luckily, Garcia was unable to birdie the final two holes and handed Tiger his first PGA Championship and second major of his career. Gary McCord predicted that this would be the start of a heated rivalry for years to come.
