Tiger Woods: 30 Best Wins of His Career
By Matt Cochran
10. 2002 U.S. Open
One of the greatest U.S. Open stages was the public course of Bethpage Black and the rowdy people of New York on the final Sunday. This was another chapter in the Tiger-Sergio rivalry, and it ended as it usually does for the Spaniard.
Garcia was in the final grouping with Tiger Woods and started four shots back, but it never looked good for him. He shot four over and never really closed the gap with Tiger.
Phil Mickelson made things interesting, however. Lefty got within two strokes of Big Cat on the back nine, but that would be as close as he’d get. Mickelson finished three back of Woods, but 3-under was too good to beat on a devastating Bethpage Black course.
Not only was this Tiger’s eighth major victory, but it came against two of his biggest rivals. He was also the only golfer under par for the tournament. It was the first time someone since Jack Nicklaus in 1972 won the Masters and U.S. Open in the same year.
