9. 2000 PGA Championship

Tiger Woods took on an unlikely hero in the 2000 PGA Championship when he was in the final grouping with Bob May. May was Tiger’s idol when he was a child, once saying, “I just wanted to hopefully one day win as many tournaments as [May] did.”

Woods and May were well ahead of anyone else in the field and had themselves an old-fashioned showdown. May got off to an early two-shot lead by the 7th hole, but Tiger battled back.

With a birdie on the 17th, Woods tied up the tournament and both golfers went on to birdie the 72nd hole to force a three-hole playoff.

It was a miracle Bob May was able to take Tiger Woods the distance and unfortunate he couldn’t hold him off. Tiger would end things in the playoff to lock up his second straight PGA Championship and fifth career major.
