29. 2000 Memorial Tournament
There are certain tournaments that Tiger Woods just happens to dominate year after year. One of those events is Jack Nicklaus’ Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio.
Woods first won the event in 1999, but it was 2000 that was probably the most important. It was this year that he successfully defended his title for the first time in the tournament’s history and his career.
"“It’s pretty neat to finally defend a tournament,” Tiger said after his win at Memorial. “I’ve done it in amateur golf. I just haven’t done it in professional golf until this week.”"
At the time, it was Woods’ 13th victory in 24 worldwide starts. Little did we know that the Tiger Slam was on the horizon. It was after this tournament that he’d go on to win the rest of the majors that season and the Masters that next season.
Some could argue that the 2000 Memorial Tournament was the launching point for the Tiger Slam. In an eerie foreshadowing, Woods almost predicted his major dominance before he left the Memorial.
He spoke about his next start which was the U.S. Open and said, “I have some things I need to work on. When I get there I’ll be primed and ready to go.” Ready would be an understatement.
