Muirfield dates all the way back to 1744, but in 1891 Old Tom Morris designed a new, private 18 hole course.

A year later Muirfield hosted its first Open Championship back in 1892 where Harold Hilton won.

In total, Muirfield has hosted sixteen Open Championships with the last one coming in 2013 where Phil Mickelson ended up hoisting the Claret Jug.
