Golf Courses: Top 30 in the World
By Danny Norris
Royal Troon achieved “Royal” status in 1978 to celebrate its 100th year anniversary
#24. Royal Troon (Old Course)
Established: 1878
Location: Troon, South Ayrshire, Scotland
Designed: Dr. Alister MacKenzie
Type: Private
Par: 71
Length: 7,175 yards (6,561 meters)
Royal Troon is one of the unique courses as it has both the shortest hole and longest hole in Open Championship history.
The par-3 eighth hole “postage stamp” is one of the best single holes in the world. It’s a bit of a drop from the tee box to the green, but it is surrounded by bunkers all-around and going in anyone will cost you a couple of strokes.
“Postage stamp” may be short, but it’s a hole that you have to respect immensely.
The par-5 sixth hole is the longest hole in Open Championship history as it clocks in at 601 yards. If the wind is howling in your face, this hole can potentially pose a significant problem.
The Old Course at Royal Troon has hosted The Open Championship eight times since 1923 and will be hosting The Open Championship in 2016.
