It felt at times as though the 2015 US Women’s Open was a golf tournament wrapped inside a drama wrapped inside a test of physical endurance.
While Stacy Lewis and Brooke Henderson and Inbee Park and In Gee Chun were battling for control of the leaderboard, defending champion Michelle Wie was doing her very best to stay in the game. Sporting an amazing array of physio-tapings and strapped into an ankle brace, Wie somehow managed still to be the most stylish player in the field.
She also mounted a thoroughly vigorous defense of her title, slamming her balls off the tee and then limping gamely to her next shot. A lesser player would have withdrawn. Wie never let up. On Sunday she came mighty close to acing the 235-yard par 4 16th!
It was a year of injuries and disappointing outcomes for Michelle Wie but we all got a good look at her fighting spirit, first at Lancaster and then again in Germany. She assured Captain Inkster she’d be 100% and she delivered.
