Reid’s athletic talent got lost in her personal grief for a time, but her coach and her team provided the solid platform from which she sprang back to life last year. In Turkey I watched Reid put her game to work in earnest, but the real reclamation came in Germany at the Solheim Cup.
Playing with Charley Hull in the Friday foursomes match, Reid was the perfect competitor. The pair dispatched Michelle Wie and Brittany Lincicome, a very tough combination, to put the first European point on the board. Playing with Carlota Ciganda in the afternoon fourball match, Reid was again fierce in battle against the toughest American team in the field, Cristie Kerr and Lexi Thompson. The match was halved, largely because Reid wouldn’t give way.
Reid continued her romp on Saturday. She and Ciganda again delivered a powerful game in their foursomes match against Alison Lee and Michelle Wie and put another European point on the board. Going into the Sunday singles matches, Mel Reid had put 2 1/2 of Europe’s 10 points on the leaderboard and she wasn’t finished.
Reid was one of three Europeans — Icher and Nordqvist were the other two – to win their singles match. Despite Europe’s devastating loss in Germany, Reid’s performance was breathtaking. Look for her to bring that game to the tee box again in 2016!
