The 2016 Omega Dubai Desert Classic, the Major of the Middle East, has a field packed with power players to challenge defending champion Rory McIlroy.

This week the European Tour goes to Dubai for the 27th edition of the Omega Dubai Desert Classic. The “Major of the Middle East” boasts a long list of golf luminary winners: Seve Ballesteros (1992), Ernie Els (1994, 02, 05), Fred Couples (1995), José Maria Olazábal (1998), Mark O’Meara (2004) , Tiger Woods (2006, 08) and Rory McIlroy (2009,2015). Between them this group have won 32 Major Championships.

McIlroy, Ernie Els (1994, 2002, 05), Tiger Woods (2006, 2008) and Stephen Gallacher (2013, 2014), are the only players to record multiple victories in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

The Majlis Course at the Emirates Golf Club, which hosts the Omega Dubai Desert Classic, has been ranked among the World’s Top 100 Courses by Golf World. The Maljis measures 7301 yards from the tips and is characterized by narrow ribbons of fairway, tall desert dunes, fresh and saltwater lakes, and large, fast, undulating greens.

The closing hole is a killer. It requires a long approach over water to a crazily-shaped green. Ian Woosnam and Tiger Woods, among others, have felt the sting of this hole.

I’m looking for a well-fought battle this week in Dubai. Let’s take a look at my list of top-10 contenders.
