Bill Murray Gets Police Called On Him After Throwing Fans’ Phones Off Balcony
By Matt Cochran
Bill Murray found himself in trouble with the law this week while attending the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after throwing some fans’ phones off a 2nd-story rooftop.
Bill Murray’s status for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was in doubt earlier this week as he recently underwent hand surgery and wasn’t sure if he would be able to play. However, after Thursday night’s incident, the Caddyshack star may be regretting his decision to attend the event.
Usually a crowd favorite wherever he goes, Murray found himself in trouble with the law after an altercation with some fans.
Justin Timberlake was hosting a shindig on Thursday in celebration of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The event took place at Vesuvio lounge, an Italian seaside restaurant with a nice rooftop patio.
JT’s party was open to the public, so of course there were fans trying to snap some photos of the celebrities, including Bill Murray. Here’s what went down according to TMZ:
Bill was hanging out at the Vesuvio rooftop lounge, a popular watering hole for celebs playing in the annual Pebble Beach Pro-Am golf tourney. It’s going on now, and Bill is playing.
The owner of the restaurant, Scott Pepe, tells us Bill wasn’t drinking … he just got really pissed when a few patrons got starstruck and took his pic.
The fans were pretty obvious, with flashes going off only 10 feet away from Bill, according to Scott. He says Bill got so angry he got up and chucked their phones off the 2nd story rooftop.
The owners of the phones called police on the 65-year-old, but he was gone by the time they arrived at the location. Law enforcement contacted Murray’s agents on Friday to get to the bottom of it. Police commander of Carmel, Paul Tomasi, said, “He acknowledged that he was there and said he is willing to replace the property that was damaged.”
The couple decided to not press charges against the actor.
Murray usually seems pretty friendly when he’s encountered by fans asking him for pictures, but I suppose everyone has there breaking points. If there’s a lesson to be learned from this, it’s that fans shouldn’t play amateur paparazzi around the old man.

As for Murray’s status in the Pro-Am, he’s still going strong with playing partner D.A. Points, but it looks like they’ll miss the cut. The two currently sit at -7 with a projected cut line of -13.
