Australian Women’s Open Fantasy Golf Picks
Lydia Ko v Minjee Lee: could be a Sunday Shootout!
Yes, Lydia Ko is the defending champion. Yes, Lydia Ko is sitting on the top of the Rolex Rankings and has been for 16 weeks. Yes, Lydia Ko just completed an astonishing come-from-behind three-peat at the New Zealand Women’s Open. Those are all good reasons to pick her for your team, without hesitation.
But wait. Hall of Famer Karrie Webb, the grande dame of Australian golf, and Minjee Lee, her most recent protege, are also in this group. They’re both splendid competitors and they’re going to be playing on home ground and enjoying tremendous fan support. Webb finished inside the top 20 last year and Lee inside the top 10.
But wait some more. Brooke Henderson, the bright and shining light of Canadian golf, one of the rising stars in women’s golf, is also in the field. Although this will be her debut in Down Under competition, Henderson wants a 2016 win and she wants it badly. She plays an aggressive game (as does Webb).
With Inbee Park, Stacy Lewis, Lexi Thompson and Brittany Lincicome taking a pass on the Australian Open, Group 1 has some different choices this week and many of them are very appealing. Ha Na Jang and Charley Hull have both had strong starts to 2016. A bit further down the rankings, Chella Choi and Karine Icher are also probably safe picks.
But if you’re looking for the likely winner to emerge from this group, you’ll probably want to make a decision between the teenage phenoms – Ko, Lee, and Henderson.
