The WGC-Cadillac Championship field will challenge Dustin Johnson’s bid for back-to-back wins.

With the Honda Classic fading into the rearview mirror, the PGA Tour now heads to the first true marquee event of the season: the WGC-Cadillac Championship. Played annually at the Blue Monster at Trump National Doral Miami, the event is a difficult one with taxing holes and pleasant scenery in equal measure.

Once upon a time, the Blue Monster was one of the easier courses on the PGA Tour, but that all changed in 2014.

That year, WGC-Cadillac Championship organizers unveiled a substantial redesign, aimed at making the course a bigger, wetter and tougher test for the world’s best gofers. The results were immediate: from 2007 through 2013, the average winning score was 16.4 strokes under par, but 2014 champion Patrick Reed could only manage four-under.

Last year’s winner, Dustin Johnson, was nine-under-par–better, but a far cry from where it was.

Of course, the redesigned Blue Monster could be in for a short tenure on the PGA Tour schedule. Resort owner Donald Trump – whether you love him or hate him – has ruffled plenty of feathers with his presidential campaign. Numerous media outlets have reported that Tim Finchem and company are seriously considering moving the WGC-Cadillac Championship to a new venue in order to distance the game of golf from the polarizing billionaire. Indeed, a spokesman announced that the PGA Tour would “explore all options regarding the event’s future.”

That’s about as noncommittal as you can get, but it doesn’t refute the possibility that change is on the horizon. So, enjoy this week of tournament golf at the Blue Monster – it could be the last of its kind.

Without further ado, let’s get to it. Here are the best bets for success at the WGC-Cadillac Championship.
