Fred Daly: 1911-1990     Born Portrush, County Antrim

Fred Daly competed in professional golf from the 1930 through the 1950s, capturing his first title, the Irish International, in 1936. Daly is best remembered as the first Irishman to win The Open Championship (1947). Ireland had him to thank for the glory that would elude the country until Padraig Harrington (2007), and Graeme McDowell (2010) captured major championships for Northern Ireland.

Another notch on Daly’s tam is his stake to claim as the only Ulsterman to win the Irish Open, which was contested at Portmarnock. He also played on 4 Ryder cup teams in his career (1947-1953) and he was awarded with the Order of the British Empire in 1984 at the New Year Honours for his services to the game of golf, an honor bestowed upon those who are of good service to their countries.
