Des Smyth        Born 1953,  Drogheda, County Louth

Desmond John Smyth turned pro in 1974 and played on the European Tour for more than 25 years, winning 8 tournaments across 4 decades.

Smyth remained a consistent force on the World Cup and Alfred Dunhill Cup and served as a vice-captain for Ian Woosnam at the 2006 Ryder Cup with Ian Woosnam.

For a time Smyth held the record as the oldest player to win on the European Tour when he hoisted the trophy at the 2001 Madeira Island Open at the age of 48 years, 34 days old. It was more than a decade before Miguel Angel Jimenez edged him out at the age of 48 years, 11 months, 13 days.
