Virtual Flyover:
The 11th hole is the beginning of the famous “Amen Corner.” The drive is hit between the trees to a fairway that slopes from right to left. The majority of the misses we see here are to the right, and then you need luck. It’s anyone’s guess as to if you will have an opening, or let alone a swing at all. Year in and year out this is one of the most difficult holes on the course.
Once you find the fairway, it’s a shot that plays downhill where the bailout is to the right, away from the pond fronting the green to the left. A lot of times the second shot plays into the wind which makes judging how much the ball will get hung up in the air even more difficult. When the fairways firm up, there is a chance if you land it short of the green that the ball can skip all the way into the hazard.
As you would expect, as the hole location moves further towards the back the hole just plays even tougher. Success on this hole is usually determined by how well you chip to the right of the green. Getting it up and down is critical to saving a shot that you might need down the stretch of this championship.
