Masters Debutantes – 8 Rookies Who Made the Cut
Round 1 – 73 Round 2 – 71 Leaderboard Status – T8
The PGA TOUR’s Rob Bolton knew what he was doing when he picked Daniel Berger as one of his Masters’ sleepers. The TOUR’s 2015 Rookie of the Year knows his way around the golf course and despite his debutante status he’s proved again that he’s a quick learner.
While Berger is still on the hunt for his first TOUR victory, he twice finished runner-up in his rookie year, at the Honda Classic and the BMW Championship. Despite a slow start in 2016 he has finished T11 and T5 in his last two stroke-play starts and recorded his first top 10 of the season at the Shell Houston Open last week, where he birdied half of the holes on Sunday before signing for 6-under 66.
Berger ranks ninth in three-putt avoidance and packs some punch off the tee despite a wiry frame. Both skills are serving him well this week as he works his way around Augusta National in some very trying conditions. Given some of the back nine meltdowns today – Jordan Spieth and Bryson DeChambeau come immediately to mind, Berger’s back nine 36 is an impressive number.
