BMW PGA Championship Top 10 Power Rankings
By Joe Walton
The European Tour summer season is really underway now and this week it’s time for the flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship.
BMW PGA Championship is the European Tour‘s equivalent of the PGA TOUR’s PLAYERS Championship. They are both the flagship event of their respective tours. THE PLAYERS is held at the PGA TOUR’s headquarters, TPC Sawgrass. The European Tour’s equivalent of TPC Sawgrass is the wonderful Wentworth Club in Surrey, about an hour’s drive away from London.
There is always a great deal of attention given to the players who do not tee it up at Wentworth but even without the likes of Rory McIlroy, Justin Rose, Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia there are plenty of world-class players competing around Wentworth’s West Course.
The par-72 layout measures a touch over 7,300 yards. That length would challenge any club golfer but it is not massive by the standards of the top professionals. The relative lack of distance meant that the course was becoming easier to overpower, hence the recent remodeling work undertaken under the watchful eye of Ernie Els.
Wentworth’s primary defences are the tightness of the fairways and the trickiness of its greens. It is vital to keep the ball on the fairways and hit a high proportion of greens in regulation to have any chance of joining the tournament’s impressive list of previous winners.
The BMW PGA Championship always attracts a strong following from the locals and they’ll hopefully be treated to a great battle at the top of the leaderboard given the strength of the field. Let’s have a look at the 10 competitors in with the best shout of glory.
