This week, the PGA TOUR will wrap up its Texas two-step. The newly christened DEAN & DELUCA Invitational (formerly the Crowne Plaza Invitational) recalls some glorious golf history.
The venue, Colonial Country Club, is a venerable old course with a storied past. One of the most prominent winners of the event is Ben Hogan, the late Fort Worth resident who hoisted the trophy five times in his career – they don’t call it Hogan’s Alley for nothing.
In terms of course management, this week’s event will present a stark change of pace. As players have gotten longer over the years, so too have golf courses, but Colonial is a throwback track that places a premium on iron play and short game – it’s little wonder that the list of recent winners includes names like Zach Johnson and Steve Stricker.
